Dear Hazel Park Parents and Community,

As our winter break is upon us, February 20-24, I wanted to take the time to share some of the exciting happenings in the district. We continue to be proud of the work our students and staff  are doing.

Hazel Park High School makes list of best high schools in Oakland County: Hazel Park High School came in eighth in a ranking from the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, an independent institution that has been studying educational issues for 30 years. The Mackinac Center’s ranking considers both student test scores and socioeconomic status. The state’s ranking does not take into account the percentage of students in a district who are living in poverty, according to a statement from the Mackinac Center. Numerous studies have established a link between low income and academic performance.  We continue to be pleased with the hard work that our staff and students put into their education every day.

Kindergarten Open house: Kindergarten open house took place in January in all three elementary buildings.  Parents who are interested in enrolling their children for the 2017-2018 school year can visit our website under parents and go to the kindergarten area to pre enroll and add their child’s name to the kindergarten list. Our schools will contact the parents for a spring date to be screened.

Pre-School: Parents who are wishing to enroll their children in our GSRP or Preschool Academy for the 2017-2018 school year should reach out to Webster School at  248-658-5501.  Children who are three and four years of age by September 1, 2017 may attend our preschool programs.  We are excited to provide these wonderful programs to our families.  Contact our school now to get your children on our lists for the upcoming school year.

Sports Celebration: Our Hazel Park High School sports teams have had an outstanding winter season.  We encourage you to visit our website and bring your students out to watch our High School students compete throughout the year.  On February 17 during the High School boys basketball game at 7:00 p.m., all the winter sports will be honored at halftime. Come encourage our Hazel Park students during our halftime show.  It will be a great community event for all.

School Resource Officer: Officer Pence, who has served our school district for the last nine years will be retiring from the Hazel Park Police Department.  The Hazel Park Police Department will be naming a new School Resource Officer no later than March. We are extremely grateful for the service that Officer Pence has given the district. We look forward to our continued relationship with the police department as we aim to educate our students in our schools regarding the positive role of law enforcement in our society.

School Calendar: During this school year there has been an increase in half days.  Shortly, we will send a survey home regarding your input for the 2017-2018 school year calendar.  Please send your child to school on half days. While we understand for some of you this is very difficult, school attendance is very important for students learning; each and every hour counts.  Teachers do plan educational activities on all school days.  When students are not present they are missing precious learning activities.  Your input on future calendars can be given on the calendar survey that we send to you in the future.

Promise Zone Auction: The Promise Zone will host its annual Auction on March 4th at the Hazel Park Community Center from 6pm-9pm .  Tickets are $55. Come and join the community as we raise funds that support our students achieving their educational dreams.  Tickets can be purchased by contacting amy.kruppe@hazelparkschools.org or kayla.roney@hazelparkschools.org.  Come join us as we celebrate our students wonderful college success stories.

Our District calendar is full of events. Participate in the wonderful activities in our Hazel Park Schools.  We are Focusing on the Future in Hazel Park.
