Annual Education Report

  • April 18, 2016

    Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for Hoover Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Leslie Baker, Principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically here, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

Hoover School is challenged with having a large achievement gap between our lowest and highest performing students, especially in math. We are meeting the challenge with an additional interventionist and the implementation of MTSS - Multi-tiered System of Supports. "The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) defines Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as an integrated, multi-tiered system of instruction, assessment, and intervention designed to meet the achievement and behavioral health needs of ALL learners. In short, an MTSS framework is designed to ensure that each and every student that walks into a classroom will have his or her individual needs met through high-quality instruction."

State law requires that we also report additional information on the following:

Students who live in the Hoover attendance area are assigned to Hoover Elementary School. Students within the Hazel Park School District but not within the Hoover attendance area may apply for Open Enrollment. Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for 105 Schools of Choice Status. Students who reside in counties contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

Hoover’s School Improvement Plan is used to make instructional decisions and guide the staff in creating a positive learning environment, which provides the opportunity for all students to succeed. It is reviewed and revised each year.

Hoover Elementary School is located on Hoover Ave. in the city of Hazel Park. There are 356 students in grades K-5. We are a RTI (Response to Intervention/Instruction) School, providing intervention for our struggling students. We also have special education programs/services for our students in need. www.hazelparkschools.org

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content expectations at each grade level and content area K-12. Hoover Elementary School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future. The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our curricular standards and benchmarks. Information on the core curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

Hoover uses Fountas & Pinnell reading inventory to assess our students' reading levels. The percentage of students who were on or above benchmark for 2014-15 are as follows: Kindergarten 81.3%, 1st grade 50%, 2nd grade 55.8%, 3rd grade 75%, and 4th grade 69.6%

The number of students represented by parents at Parent/Teacher Conferences was 288 out of 356 students. This means that 81% of our student population had a parent attending a conference.

Hoover Elementary School has an outstanding staff of caring individuals who help create a positive environment where all students are valued and given every opportunity to achieve success. We not only provide effective instruction for our students' academic success, but also care for the whole child with our Building Healthy Community approach. We team with our parents to help foster a home/school connection. Although we have many students from outside our district, we have continued to embody the characteristics of a community school that erases the notion of boundaries, and instead ties us together with the goal of providing the best possible education for all children.

    Sincerely,

    Leslie Baker
